The Front Yard Flower Co. is seeking staff for its urban flower farm in Richmond, BC!

 

The Front Yard Flower Co. is an emerging 3-acre small scale flower farm based out of the scenic fishing hamlet of Steveston, located in Richmond, BC. This unique farm is one of a kind in Metro Vancouver growing fresh, spray free flowers for farmers markets, bouquet subscriptions, wholesale, DIY Botanical Buckets, custom bouquet orders and intimate on-farm floral workshops. The Front Yard Flower Co.’s mission is to provide high quality locally grown flowers that can inspire joy and wonder in the natural world and provide a boutique on-farm experience where guests can see first-hand what a working flower farm looks like.

 

We are seeking to fill several positions this season to keep the farm moving forward. We have been expanding every year and this is our biggest move yet, so we need to have an awesome, upbeat, positive and hard-working crew to keep moving things forward!

 

FULL-TIME FLORIST - $18/hr

As we move into more bouquet making, we are seeking a full-time florist to assist with production bouquet making for farmer’s markets and subscriptions but there will also be opportunity for creativity as we expand into custom work. This position is also unique in that it won’t be just about florist activities, you will be shown aspects of farm work to compliment your design experience.

 

We are looking for someone with a positive, creative energy and loves to work with people. We are looking for someone that can design in an unstructured garden style for creative work but can also work fast for production style work.

 

There will be a small farm stand on site which will be your creative workspace. We are planning on being open on Saturdays in the summer to the public, so a part of the job is to receive customers and assist them with their orders.

 

START DATE DETAILS

The position starts around mid-April, with the potential of starting earlier. Monday to Friday from April to mid-late June then switching to Tuesday to Saturday to accommodate weekend walk-ins. The rate is $18.00/hr plus 4% vacation pay and 5 days of paid sick leave after 90 days of employment. Hours of work a week may vary between 30-40 hours. Work is intended to go into December.

 

START TIME

The start time will vary from 8:30-9 am in April and move earlier in the summer as needed depending on the tasks at hand.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Making market and subscription bouquets

  • Designing custom work

  • Keeping the farm stand/shop clean and tidy

  • Greeting customers and assisting them as required

  • Harvesting flowers at the appropriate stage/time

  • Post handling of flowers (cooler organization, labelling, processing, etc.)

  • Other field work could include seeding, transplanting, weeding, etc.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Physically able to lift and move heavy things (around 25kg at the most)

  • Motivated and can work efficiently

  • Punctual and ready to work with a good attitude in all types of weather (rain, heat, cold, mud)

  • Works well in a team environment and on solo tasks

  • Able to follow detailed instructions in a timely fashion

  • Adaptable in quickly changing situations with good problem-solving skills

  • Excellent customer service skills, retail experience is an asset

  • Creative thinker with a passion for flowers, good design, and sharing your knowledge of locally grown flowers with others

  • 1-2 Years previous experience an asset

  • Must have reliable vehicle access to the farm as we are a bit of a distance from the nearest bus stop on No. 2 Rd.

 

 

 

FULL-TIME FIELD CREW/MARKET, 2 positions, $16.00/hr

We are also hiring for two full-time positions for field work and to oversee the markets on Saturdays and Sundays from the end of April to late October/early November. This is a fun opportunity to get your hands dirty, work hard to produce some of the most beautiful and freshest flowers around and to balance that out with retail on the weekends at two busy Vancouver Farmer’s markets. We are looking for those who have agricultural, horticultural and/or retail experience however, those with a keen interest in the local cut flower trade will be considered as well.

 

START DATE DETAILS

The position starts around late April. Wednesday to Sunday with market dates at various locations in Vancouver. The rate is $16.00/hr plus 4% vacation pay and 5 days of paid sick leave after 90 days of employment. Hours of work a week may vary between 30-40 hours and going until late October to mid-November, depending on the season. One of the two positions I would hope could be able to drive our delivery van to/from the market on Sundays so a Class 5 drivers’ licence would be required.

 

START TIME

The start time will vary from 8:30-9 am in April and move earlier in the summer to 6:30-7 am.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Harvest flower and herb crops properly and efficiently according to instruction

  • Prepare materials for harvest days (water buckets, elastic bands, snips, etc.)

  • Maintain accurate harvesting records

  • Preparations for farmers market days

  • Other field tasks as required (weeding, planting, seeding, general farm upkeep and organization)

  • Able to work alone effectively and efficiently unsupervised

  • Able to work early mornings and in all weather conditions from heat to cold with a good attitude

  • Work a farmer’s market stall on Saturdays and Sundays, which requires some retail and customer service experience, attention to detail

  • Must be able to work Wednesdays to Sundays

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Keen interest in learning about or experience in working with flowers (horticultural, landscaping, floral, etc.)

  • Previous farm experience is an asset but not required

  • Highly motivated and able to work efficiently and effectively

  • Physically able to lift and move heavy things (around 25kg at the most)

  • Motivated and can work efficiently

  • Excellent customer service skills, retail experience is an asset

  • Creative thinker with a passion for flowers, good design, and sharing your knowledge of locally grown flowers with others

  • Class 5 Drivers licence (only for one of the two positions)

  • Must have reliable vehicle access to the farm in Richmond as we are a bit of a distance from the nearest bus stop on No. 2 Rd.

  • Between 15-30, Canadian citizen/permanent resident/refuge protection status as both positions have the possibility for being partially funded

There will be opportunities to take home farm fresh flowers! Farm work is tough work but can be physically and mentally rewarding with copious amounts of fresh air, surrounded by beauty with good people all day long.
